Understanding Alberta Tax Deadlines and Rates for 2024

Tax Filing Deadlines

In Alberta, the deadline for filing tax returns is April 30. However, you have until June 15 to file your return if you are self-employed. Filing your return after these dates may result in a late filing penalty and interest on unpaid taxes.

Retaining Tax Records

It’s recommended to keep your Alberta tax records for at least six years after you file. This helps address any questions or audits that may arise in the future.

2024 Alberta Tax Rates

The Alberta tax brackets for 2024 are as follows:

  • 10% on income up to $148,269
  • 12% on income from $148,269.01 to $177,922
  • 13% on income from $177,922.01 to $237,230
  • 14% on income from $237,230.01 to $355,845
  • 15% on income over $355,845.01

Alberta's Tax Advantages

Alberta offers the highest basic personal and spousal amounts across Canadian provinces, allowing residents to earn more before paying provincial income tax. Overall, Albertans generally pay lower taxes compared to other provinces when all taxes are considered.

Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB)

The ACFB provides financial support to lower-income families with children in Alberta. Benefits increase with the number of children in the family, up to a maximum of four children. Payments are made quarterly in August, November, February, and May.
